Alabama: Clarkson's Graduate Nursing Answer and Your Options
Clarkson College's 2026-27 state workbook answers Alabama with Does Not Meet on both the Graduate Nursing and CRNA tabs, so Clarkson's MSN, certificate and DNP clinicals have no Alabama route today. Put simply, Clarkson's graduate degree is not offered as a path to Alabama licensure, and an Alabama preceptorship has no place in your 750 MSN or 975 BSN to DNP hours. The clinic's owner changes nothing: UAB Medicine, Huntsville Hospital Health System, Montgomery's Baptist Health and Mobile's Infirmary Health and USA Health all sit on the closed side.
The position is old. Each Clarkson catalog from 2018-19 through 2023-24 printed a short list of states it could not enroll graduate nursing students from, and Alabama appeared in every edition. Newer catalogs replaced the list with the workbook, which the state authorization page walks through.
Alabama's filing rule for programs based elsewhere
Alabama expects to hear from an outside school before its students set foot in an Alabama clinic. Under Board rule 610-X-3-.09, a nursing program run from another state files, at least 15 days ahead, a letter of intent that identifies every student and the supervising clinician by license number, names the facility, and includes a statement from the facility's nursing chief, and it pays a yearly out-of-state program fee. Until the Board approves and the fee clears, its FAQ says, the clinical does not start.
Clarkson publishes no reason for its Alabama answer, so treat the rule as background only.
For Alabama RNs comparing NP programs, the practice climate matters too. AANP places Alabama among reduced-practice states: part of an NP's work there depends on a physician collaborator under a formal agreement, and the nursing board shares that oversight with the state's medical examiners.
Licenses: a 2020 compact date and a 30-day faculty rule
Multistate RN licenses have counted in Alabama since Jan. 1, 2020, two years after the first large group of compact states. Post-licensure students training there need an unencumbered Alabama or multistate license, and faculty teaching Alabama-based students beyond 30 days a year face a matching rule.
Clarkson students next door should notice the gap between license and approval. A Mississippi or Florida multistate license is valid in Alabama, yet Alabama stays closed to Clarkson graduate clinicals. Policy OG-33 ties your disclosures to the permanent home address Clarkson records at first enrollment, and an Alabama address means Alabama's row.
- You study at Clarkson and may move to Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile or MontgomerySpeak with your program director before you commit. Clarkson warns that relocating to a state where it lacks authorization can cost aid eligibility or the ability to finish. Bring your remaining clinical courses; since only one runs per term, the move date shapes the rest.

Questions Clarkson students ask
Can I complete Clarkson FNP or PMHNP clinicals in Alabama?
Not under the 2026-27 workbook. Its Graduate Nursing tab gives Alabama a single answer, Does Not Meet, covering every NP track and the DNP. Alabama's Board also has out-of-state programs file with it before any clinical learning inside the state. Raise any Alabama plan with a Clarkson program director first.
Would my preceptor get Alabama's preceptor tax credit?
Not for a Clarkson rotation. Alabama's credit, known as APTIP and administered through the state's AHEC program office, is aimed at unpaid community preceptors in rural areas short of care, and it counts only rotations for schools physically located in Alabama. Revenue officials list it as running from tax year 2024 to Sept. 29, 2031.
I live in Alabama. Could I enroll and do clinicals in Mississippi?
Clarkson has published nothing on that case. Policy OG-33 fixes your location by the permanent home address on file, and an Alabama address lands on a Does Not Meet row. Put the question to a Clarkson program director before applying, and save the written answer alongside your admission papers.
Has Alabama ever been open to Clarkson graduate nursing?
Not in any Clarkson document since 2018. The catalogs of 2018-19 to 2023-24 kept Alabama on their closed list for graduate nursing enrollment, and Clarkson's October 2024 and October 2025 licensure disclosures read Does Not Meet for it, as the August 2026 workbook does.
