Finding NP preceptors in Omaha, Council Bluffs and Lincoln
The Omaha metro holds roughly a million people across Nebraska and Iowa, and Lincoln adds about 350,000 more, yet only two of the region's health systems publish a current route for nurse practitioner students. For most Clarkson College students here, the clinic or practice you approach directly is the main road, and the system applications are side roads with fixed deadlines. Crossing the river into Council Bluffs also brings Iowa's licensing rules into play.

What the region's systems publish for NP students
Of the five systems most students here think of first, two post a working graduate route today. The rest publish an undergraduate process, a form for instructors, or nothing current. That shapes where the real search happens.

The 2026-27 windows, laid over Clarkson's terms
When you need the preceptor matters as much as where. Here are the two published Omaha windows set against Clarkson's 2026-27 calendar and the agreement dates from its 2021-22 graduate handbook and November 2023 sheets.

As this page was updated in late September 2026, the spring 2027 window at Nebraska Medicine had only days left. A direct approach to an independent practice has no window at all, which is why it carries most metro searches.
Track by track in the metro
FNP students need outpatient primary care or rural health clinics that see all ages, and no hospitalist hours count. Because Children's Nebraska does not list FNP students, the 110 pediatric hours in NRS 840 come from pediatric or family practices you approach directly, and the 120 women's health hours in NRS 842 from OB/GYN practices, nurse midwives or women's health NPs. AGACNP students move through hospital settings course by course, from short-stay units to ICUs and emergency departments, with physicians, PAs or acute-care-certified NPs; an FNP cannot fill that role. The metro's hospitals publish little for graduate students beyond Nebraska Medicine's application, so a direct ask through a unit leader or hospitalist group is the practical place to begin.
PMHNP students have the widest published door: Children's Nebraska supports PMHNP students, which can help with the 50 hours with patients under 18. Council Bluffs: the same metro under Iowa rules
Council Bluffs sits in the Omaha metro but in Iowa, and Iowa's board has its own expectations. A licensed nurse doing graduate clinicals on the Iowa side must hold a current RN license Iowa honors, either Iowa's own or a multistate one, and works within Iowa law; Iowa leaves preceptor approval to the school and the facility together. Nebraska and Iowa have both been compact states since Jan. 19, 2018, so a multistate Nebraska license reaches across the river; a single-state one does not. Two Iowa details help in the conversation. Under Iowa's renewal rules, an Iowa nurse who supervises a student through 60 or more hours of a structured preceptorship can claim 6 contact hours, once the school documents it, and Clarkson's archived 2025 page asked students to check with their advisor about Iowa rotations. Lincoln: fewer published routes, more direct asks
Lincoln's metro counted 352,081 people in the 2025 Census estimate. Bryan Health, the city's best-known system, publishes only an access request for new college nursing instructors and approved preceptorships at Bryan Medical Center, and no NP student process turned up. CHI Health also operates in Lincoln, with the same absence of a graduate NP page.
That leaves Lincoln students working mostly through independent primary care, specialty and psychiatric practices, plus any provider contacts from their own nursing jobs, keeping Clarkson's rule that employed students train outside their own department. The preceptor rules are the same as in Omaha: a Nebraska license, two years of experience and practice that fits the course. With so few published routes in Lincoln, a local practice willing to host you for more than one course is worth extra effort to secure.

Which Omaha systems publish a route for Clarkson FNP students?
Only Nebraska Medicine, through its NP application windows. Children's Nebraska lists no FNP students, CHI Health publishes an undergraduate toolkit, and Methodist withdrew its 2024 application. Most Omaha FNP rotations therefore start with a direct approach to an all-ages outpatient practice that can sign Clarkson's agreement.
Is my Nebraska license enough for a Council Bluffs clinical?
You need an active Iowa license or a multistate license. A multistate license from Nebraska, a compact member since 2018, meets Iowa's rule for post-licensure students; a single-state Nebraska license does not. Your preceptor must also be licensed for practice in Iowa under Clarkson's rule tying preceptor licensure to the clinical state.
What do Iowa preceptors get for precepting?
Iowa's renewal rules credit 6 contact hours to a nurse who precepts a student for 60 hours or more in a structured program, provided the school supplies documentation. It is worth mentioning when you ask an Iowa-licensed nurse practitioner, since it applies to nurses licensed there.
Does Bryan Health in Lincoln have an NP student program?
Bryan Health's public pages show only a form for new college nursing instructors and approved preceptorships at Bryan Medical Center; no nurse practitioner student process was found. so a Lincoln search centers on independent practices approached directly, keeping Clarkson's preceptor rules and the Nebraska license requirement in view.
When should an Omaha student begin the preceptor search?
Earlier than feels necessary. Clarkson's 2021-22 handbook told students to begin interviewing preceptors on entering the program, and Nebraska Medicine's spring window closes Oct. 1, three months before a January start. Start at least one full term ahead of each clinical course.
