At Clarkson College the student does the finding and Clarkson does the approving. Your Graduate Nursing advisor checks the course and term, the Compliance office secures the affiliation agreement, Graduate Nursing gives final approval and course faculty clear you before hours begin, all before the catalog lets you register.
A service earns its place by making your side of that chain complete. It should know the placement process step by step, use Clarkson's own terms (the agreement form, the Compliance office, Typhon), and treat Clarkson's reviewers as the final word. Whatever it hands you should be ready to pass their review on the first submission. It should also respect the handbook's point about channels: where a health system runs its own placement office, the request goes through that office.
A match to the course, not just the specialty
A general family practice contact is not enough for a Clarkson FNP student. Each course has its own population: at least 110 pediatric primary care hours in NRS 840, at least 120 women's health hours in NRS 842, all-ages outpatient care throughout and no hospitalist hours. AGACNP students need acute-care-certified NPs, or physicians and PAs, in settings that climb from short-stay units to ICU and emergency care. PMHNP students need a psychiatrist or PMHNP, 50 therapist hours in NRS 856, and minimum hours with adults, children and older adults.
The strongest service plans those hours course by course, and knows the separate practicum rules for education and administration students as well. It should know what does not count, too, such as hospitalist hours for an FNP student or an FNP preceptor in an acute care course.
Screening against Clarkson's rules before you ask
Every candidate should clear Clarkson's preceptor rules before the first conversation: a license in your clinical state, two years of experience, no family tie, the PA limits in Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona and Maryland, and the ceiling of two preceptors per course. For working students, the search should also stay out of your own department. Ask how the service checks each of these, and whether it checks before or after it gives you a name.
It should stay inside Clarkson's map too. Clarkson's 2026-27 state workbook marks 12 states Does Not Meet for graduate nursing, so a strong service confirms your state first and searches only where your clinical can be approved. Nebraska's licensing agency leaves preceptor qualifications for post-licensure programs to the nursing program, which makes Clarkson's list the one that counts.
Paperwork ready, deadlines met
The agreement asks for the site's exact legal name, every provider you will see patients with, and the preceptor's license and credentials. A good service gathers those details along with the preceptor's yes, so the form goes in complete.
Timing is where a service proves itself. Clarkson's 2021-22 handbook and November 2023 sheets set paperwork deadlines of Nov. 1, Mar. 1 and Jun. 1, and Clarkson allowed itself up to two months for a new affiliation agreement. The service should know whether Clarkson already holds a contract with a site and start early where it does not. A submitted form is also the key to registration, with only two exceptions in the 2021-22 handbook: My Clinical Exchange requests and unavoidable preceptor changes. The whole program, with a backup
Clarkson runs one clinical course at a time: five in each MSN nurse practitioner track, with more hours for BSN to DNP students, and a fresh agreement for each course and semester. A service that thinks one course ahead lines up the next preceptor while you finish the current one. For FNP students that means a pediatric provider and a women's health provider in the middle of the plan; for PMHNP students, a licensed therapist early in NRS 856.
Then there is the mid-course exit. When a preceptor pulls out, Clarkson's handbook asks you to tell course faculty and find an alternate promptly, and no hours count with the new preceptor until the new paperwork is final. Clarkson's published sources neither endorse nor rule out placement services; they set the rules every preceptor must meet and require approval before registration. Whoever finds the preceptor, Clarkson's review is identical: advisor, Compliance, Graduate Nursing and faculty. That is why a service's work should be aimed squarely at passing it.
Will a service handle Clarkson's approval for me?
