Connecticut: Clarkson's graduate nursing answer is Does Not Meet
Clarkson College's 2026-27 state workbook lists Connecticut as Does Not Meet Requirements for Graduate Nursing, the tab covering every MSN, certificate and DNP track, and repeats that answer for CRNA and RN-BSN. Clarkson clinical hours belong in another state. No footnote sits on the Connecticut row. Clarkson's licensing link for the state goes to the Board of Examiners for Nursing, a board housed in the Department of Public Health.
This is an old answer, not a new one. Six catalogs in a row, 2018-19 to 2023-24, carried a sentence ruling out graduate nursing applicants from certain states, Connecticut included. Catalogs from 2024-25 on stopped naming states, and the workbook took over the job. The state authorization page sets Connecticut beside the rest of the Does Not Meet group.
Planning a move to Connecticut mid-program
Before any lease or job offer is signed, call your program director. Under Policy OG-33, Clarkson reads your state from the permanent home address in MyCC, and updating that address to a Does Not Meet state sets off a personal written notice from Clarkson inside 14 calendar days. Clarkson is blunt about the stakes: some forms of financial aid, and even completion of the program, can be lost.
Timing is the part you control. Clarkson's NP tracks run their clinical courses one after another, 750 hours over five courses in the MSN, so moving after your last course is a very different conversation from moving halfway through NRS 842 or NRS 863. Bring a sketch of where each remaining course would happen.
Hartford, New Haven, Danbury: the pull across the line
A handful of large systems anchor Connecticut's care: Yale New Haven Health and Hartford HealthCare, the academic UConn Health, Trinity Health Of New England, and Northwell, the New York-based system whose western Connecticut hospitals, Danbury among them, once belonged to Nuvance. Its four metros, Hartford at roughly 1.17 million people, Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury near a million, New Haven and Waterbury-Shelton, sit within commuting reach of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York.
Massachusetts and Rhode Island are Meets states in the workbook; Connecticut is not, and Clarkson wants each preceptor to hold a license in the clinical's own state. Practice rules and licensing in Connecticut
On AANP's map Connecticut is full practice, though new NPs earn that independence slowly, after at least three years, and no fewer than 2,000 hours, of working collaboratively with a physician. Connecticut became a working member of the Nurse Licensure Compact on Oct. 1, 2025; an RN holding a multistate license issued by a fellow member can now care for Connecticut patients without a separate Connecticut license. The APRN Compact, by contrast, has no Connecticut enactment.
Connecticut's nursing education regulations cap precepting at two students per preceptor and call for written contracts with clinical agencies, yet their scope is programs leading to initial licensure; APRN programs go unmentioned. Clarkson has not published the reason for its answer, and neither the compact nor the state's rules change it. How licensure and the clinical state connect is covered on the RN license page.

Questions Clarkson students ask
I live in Massachusetts. Can my Clarkson FNP clinicals be at a Connecticut practice?
Plan on Massachusetts instead. Connecticut is Does Not Meet for Graduate Nursing in the 2026-27 workbook, and Clarkson's catalog warns that certain states' board rules shut out its graduate preceptorships. A Massachusetts practice with a Massachusetts-licensed preceptor avoids both problems. If a Connecticut site seems like your only lead, ask your program director before anyone signs.
Did Connecticut joining the Nurse Licensure Compact change Clarkson's answer?
No. Compact membership, live since October 2025, only settles who may practice as an RN in Connecticut. Clarkson's workbook, dated nearly a year later, still reads Does Not Meet for Connecticut on all three nursing tabs, because that answer concerns whether Clarkson's program satisfies the state, not whether your license travels.
Was Connecticut ever open to Clarkson graduate nursing students?
Not in any Clarkson document in our research. Connecticut appears in the old catalog exclusion sentence from 2018-19 to 2023-24; its row did not move between the October 2024 and October 2025 disclosures; and the 2026-27 workbook still answers Does Not Meet for every graduate track.
My spouse has a job offer in Connecticut. What should I do first?
Before the move is final, sit down with your program director and keep a written record of the answer. Ask whether the remaining clinical courses can wrap up before the move date, then let us line up preceptors in your current state on that calendar.
