Health system request routes for Clarkson NP students
A handful of large systems in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota accept nurse practitioner student requests through channels they run themselves, and Clarkson College's former Graduate Nursing Resources page pointed students to each one. You file the request, the system makes the call, and any offer still has to clear Clarkson's site and preceptor agreement. Most of these windows shut weeks ahead of Clarkson's own paperwork date, so timing decides more than the choice of system.

What a system request is, and what it is not
Clarkson's Graduate Nursing Resources page, last archived in July 2025 and since removed from the live site, opened a short list with "the most frequently used sites (Nebraska, Iowa, & South Dakota)" and described how to ask each one for a placement. Every route on that list begins with the student and ends with the health system's own decision. Clarkson's part comes afterward, in the paperwork that turns an offer into approved hours.
The underlying rule stays the same: at Clarkson, lining up a preceptor is your task, as Clarkson's student-led search model makes clear. Asking a hospital system is one way to carry out that task. It comes with a fixed window, other schools in the same queue and no promise that a preceptor will be available.
Clarkson's DocuSign instructions, written in 2021 and still posted in 2024, told students who were going through a placement site to send the request to their advisor or through that site's portal, naming myClinicalExchange as the example. When an offer arrives, the site and preceptor agreement must still be filed and approved before the first hour counts.

Nebraska Medicine: one application, at least a month
Nebraska Medicine describes every student experience as unpaid and says each placement must begin with an application. Its student placement page asks students to refrain from reaching out to its preceptors to set up an experience on their own, which reverses the approach you would take with an independent clinic. Review takes a month or longer.
Nurse practitioner applications open three times a year: Sept. 1 to Oct. 1 for a spring clinical, Jan. 1 to Feb. 1 for summer and Apr. 1 to May 1 for fall. The older APP and graduate request addresses now forward to the system's Workday listing called Student_Placement.
Clarkson's archived 2025 page added two working details. Students placed at Nebraska Medicine complete Epic training, and a placement with a physician (MD or DO) is handled by that physician's own student placement coordinator. Clarkson names Nebraska Medicine as its educational partner; what that relationship means for your application is covered on the Clarkson and Nebraska Medicine page.
Children's Nebraska: Match Day and a short program list
Children's Nebraska lets MSN and DNP students request time with a provider at its hospital, its Specialty Pediatric Center (SPC) or a Children's Physicians clinic, and it assigns preceptors as they become available. Students apply through myClinicalExchange by Oct. 1 for spring, Feb. 1 for summer and June 1 for fall. Applications are weighed together at a Match Day about three months before the semester, and late applications are denied.
For most Clarkson students the program list is the obstacle. Children's supports CRNA, NNP, PNP-AC, PNP and PMHNP students, so among Clarkson's three NP tracks only PMHNP qualifies; FNP and AGACNP are missing. For a PMHNP student, it is one published path toward the 50 hours with patients under 18 that Clarkson's November 2023 PMHNP sheet listed as a minimum.
Children's also requires a contract with the college and prerequisite training, and its own team members are served first. Clarkson's July 2025 onboarding page still showed Children's 2021 deadline wording, so rely on Children's page rather than Clarkson's old copy.
CHI Health, Methodist and UnityPoint: thinner public detail
The only school-facing CHI Health document in public view is its Undergraduate Nursing School Toolkit, last updated July 2023, in which one or two coordinators from each school submit every request through myClinicalExchange. No CHI page for graduate NP students turned up. Clarkson's 2025 page said all CHI clinicals need a My Clinical Exchange placement, listed Clarkson's MSN advising office as coordinator, noted that CHI puts its own employees first and required Iowa Mandatory Reporter training for anyone placed at CHI.
Methodist Health System posted an APP Preceptorship Program Application in April 2024. That address now forwards to an education page offering DOVE Days, a Medical Laboratory Science Program and a Pharmacy Residency Program, with nothing for nurse practitioner students. UnityPoint Health, according to Clarkson's 2025 page, runs a centralized request process on myClinicalExchange.
Where a system publishes little, ask your advisor whether Clarkson still coordinates requests there, and approach independent practices that can sign Clarkson's agreement.
Avera and Sanford: requests that ran through Clarkson
Avera Health and Sanford Health worked differently on Clarkson's 2025 page. Instead of applying to the system, the student emailed the request to Clarkson's MSN advising office by July 1 for fall, Oct. 1 for spring or Mar. 1 for summer. The same page listed both systems among those using My Clinical Exchange.
Look closely at the fall date. July 1 comes a month after June 1, the fall date Clarkson's 2021-22 graduate handbook and November 2023 sheets set for the agreement form. That handbook exempted students with placement requests pending in My Clinical Exchange from the rule that the form must be in before registration. Whether the exemption covers an Avera or Sanford request today is a question for your Graduate Nursing advisor, asked well before registration opens.

Questions Clarkson students ask
Can I email a Nebraska Medicine provider and ask them to precept me?
Nebraska Medicine asks students to go through its application rather than contacting its preceptors to arrange a rotation. Apply in the NP window for your term on its Workday Student_Placement site, and expect a physician's student placement coordinator to handle MD or DO requests. Clarkson's 2021-22 handbook gave matching advice: follow each location's proper channels.
Does Children's Nebraska accept Clarkson FNP students for pediatric hours?
Its published APRN list covers CRNA, NNP, PNP-AC, PNP and PMHNP students, and FNP does not appear. Clarkson's November 2023 FNP sheet asked for at least 110 NRS 840 hours with a pediatric primary care provider, so FNP students look to pediatric and family practices they approach directly. The NRS 840 guide lists the hours and provider types.
Is a health system request enough to register for my Clarkson clinical course?
The 2026-27 catalog requires preceptor and site approval before you register for any NP clinical course. Clarkson's 2021-22 handbook made an exception for students with placement requests pending in My Clinical Exchange. Check with your advisor that the exception still applies, and remember that hours logged before the agreement is fully approved did not count under that handbook.
What happens if a system turns my request down close to the semester?
You still need an approved preceptor, and Clarkson's calendar keeps running. Children's rejects late applications outright and Nebraska Medicine needs a month or more to review, so a refusal can arrive with little time left. That is why a parallel search matters; when the calendar is already tight, read what to do with little time left.
Which request routes did Clarkson list for students outside Nebraska?
Clarkson's 2025 list covered Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota only: Avera and Sanford through Clarkson's MSN advising office, UnityPoint and CHI through My Clinical Exchange, and the Omaha systems. Students in other states found their preceptors directly, and Clarkson's workbook decides which states are open for clinicals at all.
