Clarkson's online RN to BSN and its population health practicum
Clarkson College's RN to BSN credits your RN education with 83 validation hours, leaves 37 credits to take online, and finishes with NRS 482 Capstone/Practicum: practicum hours in a population health setting near home or, with faculty approval, at your workplace. Clarkson has not published the practicum's hour count, so this guide shows where to get it and how to plan around it.

How the 120 credits add up
The degree totals 120 credits, but you take only 37 of them. Clarkson awards 83 validation credits for the nursing education behind your RN license, and its residency rule asks that at least 30 credits be earned at Clarkson. The 37 break down as follows, per the 2026-27 catalog.

Experience can trim the list further. Students with two or more years of nursing experience may submit a portfolio to earn credit for one of NRS 352, NRS 475 or NRS 481. The validation figure itself has moved: it was 84 in 2024-25 and has been 83 since 2025-26, and in 2020-21 the courses ran under an "RN to BSN/MSN" label that totaled 130 credits.
Admission and start dates
You need an associate degree or diploma in nursing, a current, unencumbered RN license valid in whichever state hosts your clinical or residency work, and GPAs of at least 2.5 both overall and in math and science. The license condition comes from Policy AD-1 and matters for the practicum: your license has to be effective in the state where you complete the hours.
Clarkson says the program has "Start dates for every semester," with rolling admission. Applications for 2026-27 are due Aug. 10 (fall), Jan. 4 (spring) and May 3 (summer). The program page lists three semesters full-time and five part-time, and also says the degree is "attainable in less than a year." The two claims fit together: fall (Aug. 20 to Dec. 9), spring (Jan. 7 to Apr. 28) and summer (May 13 to Aug. 4) run back to back inside twelve months, which is our reading of the 2026-27 calendar.
NRS 482 Capstone/Practicum
NRS 482 is the one course in the program with practicum hours. The 2026-27 catalog describes "Practicum hours in a population health environment" plus a final project, worth four credits. It requires NRS 352 and a current, unencumbered RN license, and Clarkson's program page asks that NRS 205 come before any 400-level theory or clinical course.
Two published lines tell you where the hours can happen. The program page says "Practicum hours may be completed in or near your hometown." The 2025-26 catalog adds that clinical applications may be done where you work if faculty approve and the course competencies can be met in that setting. For a hospital nurse, the population health focus points toward work that looks beyond individual bedside care.
What Clarkson does not print is the number of hours. Neither the course page nor the program page gives one, and Clarkson's credit-hour policy does not name this course. Get the figure from three places, in this order: the NRS 482 syllabus when the course opens in Canvas, your course faculty, and your enrollment and academic advisor before you register.
Ask for the NRS 482 hour count before the term starts, so you can plan shifts around it instead of discovering it in week one.
Who sets up the practicum site
Clarkson's published pages describe where the practicum can happen but not who arranges it. Nothing we found says whether faculty assign a setting, offer a list, or expect you to propose one. That gap is worth closing early. Ask your advisor or course faculty the question directly, in writing, a term before NRS 482.
Two things apply either way. First, Clarkson tracks health and safety requirements in Qualified First/Verified (CastleBranch before mid-2026), and Policy SW-7 keeps any noncompliant student out of clinical; the initial deadlines are Jan. 30 for spring, May 30 for summer and Sept. 30 for fall. Second, if you live in Nebraska, the state's DHHS says its nursing board leaves post-licensure programs outside its approval process, so an RN to BSN practicum there has no separate state approval step.
The seven-state licensure answer
Clarkson's AY 2026-27 state workbook has a separate RN-BSN tab, and it is much narrower than the graduate one. It marks Meets Requirements in seven states only: Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Louisiana. All 43 others carry Does Not Meet. Two of the seven are recent: Louisiana moved to Meets in 2025 and North Dakota in the 2026-27 file.
A post-licensure program marked this narrowly can look surprising, but it is Clarkson's own published answer, and Clarkson reads your state from the permanent address in MyCC. Talk to the program before enrolling from outside those seven states, and again before moving, since updating your address to a Does Not Meet state sets off a new disclosure. Grades, the time limit and the next degree
Undergraduate rules apply: C- or better in every course, one repeat at most, a 2.0 cumulative GPA, and dismissal after failing the same course twice or earning a D or F in two courses. A third WF also ends enrollment. The seven-year limit on finishing applies here as everywhere at Clarkson, with leave time included. The progression rules guide has the details.
If a master's is your next step, note that Clarkson's former RN to MSN option stopped taking students in 2023-24 and left the catalog in 2024-25, so the route now runs through the BSN. Clarkson's BSN is accredited by ACEN, and the MSN and BSN to DNP accept a BSN from an ACEN, CCNE or NLN CNEA program.

How many practicum hours is NRS 482 at Clarkson?
Clarkson has not published the figure on the course page or the program page. The syllabus in Canvas will state it once the course opens, and course faculty or your enrollment and academic advisor can give it earlier. Ask before you register so you can plan work shifts around the practicum.
Can I do the RN to BSN practicum where I work?
Clarkson's 2025-26 catalog allows clinical applications at your workplace with faculty approval, as long as the clinical competencies can be met there. Because NRS 482 centers on population health, a project that looks at a community or patient population fits better than your regular unit duties.
Can I enroll in Clarkson's RN to BSN if I live outside Nebraska?
Clarkson's 2026-27 workbook marks the RN to BSN as meeting requirements in seven states: Nebraska and its neighbors Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota, plus North Dakota, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Every other state is marked Does Not Meet. Speak with the program before applying from any other state.
How fast can I finish Clarkson's RN to BSN?
Clarkson lists three semesters full-time and five part-time, and says the degree can be earned in less than a year, which three consecutive terms allow. A portfolio can replace one of NRS 352, NRS 475 or NRS 481 if you have two or more years of nursing experience.
Does the RN to BSN require any campus visits?
Clarkson publishes no campus requirement for it. Theory coursework is fully online through Canvas, and the NRS 482 practicum happens in or near your hometown. The Graduate Weekend in Omaha applies only to graduate nurse practitioner students taking NRS 830, so an RN to BSN student can finish without traveling to campus.
