Typhon at Clarkson: what goes into your clinical log
Typhon is the clinical log Clarkson College's NP students used for hours, patient encounters and required experiences, and the November 2023 clinical sheets say anything left out of it earns no credit. Your preceptor and site show up in Typhon only after the DocuSign agreement is complete, so the log and the paperwork move together.

Typhon's status in 2026
The current catalog sets what has to be logged: each NRS clinical course page lists its hours, from 100 in NRS 830 for the MSN (125 for the BSN to DNP) up to 180 or 250 in the last course of each track. Where those hours are recorded comes from older papers. Clarkson's 2021-22 graduate handbook names Typhon, the Typhon Group NPST system, for clinical logs, rotation scheduling and the preceptor and site databases, and the November 2023 FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP sheets say hours, observation hours and required experiences "must be documented in Typhon for you to receive credit."
Whether Typhon is still the log for 2026-27 is something our research could not settle. The 2025-26 catalog's fee list still carried Typhon items for MSN students, the 2026-27 fee schedule was not in the online catalog, and no live Clarkson page names Typhon today. Preceptor and site records come from the agreement
Your preceptor's record in Typhon depends on the agreement. The 2023 sheets are explicit: "Preceptor and clinical sites will not be added into Typhon without DocuSign paperwork being completed." A preceptor missing from the list on your first clinical day points to an agreement still waiting on a signature or on the Compliance office.
That makes the log a handy check on your paperwork. A preceptor who appears in Typhon has cleared the DocuSign step; one who does not means the site and preceptor agreement is still open, and hours in that gap would not count anyway.
Caps and minimums you will see in the log
The 2023 sheets set limits that only become real once you start logging. Specialty hours are capped per course, and some courses require a minimum with a particular kind of provider.

PMHNP students also log population minimums across the track: 100 hours or more with adult patients 18 to 59, and no fewer than 50 each with patients younger than 18 and patients 60 or older. Setting-by-setting detail is on the FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP site guides.
Observation hours
Observation time goes into Typhon too, under separate rules. The 2023 sheets require faculty approval beforehand, allow no hands-on care and need no DocuSign agreement, and the FNP and AGACNP sheets allow as many as 10 optional observation hours in each course that follows NRS 830. Ask course faculty how those hours count toward the course total before you plan around them.
Because observation skips the agreement, it is a handy way to see a specialty setting for a day. Treat it as a supplement to precepted time with an approved preceptor, not a stand-in for it.
Required experiences, counted one by one
Hours alone do not complete an FNP course. The November 2023 FNP sheet also counts required patient experiences, for example ten visits for type 2 diabetes and ten for hypertension in NRS 832 and NRS 844, a set number of well-child exams in NRS 840, and 10 pelvic exams and 10 breast exams in NRS 842. Each one has to be logged in Typhon to count.
The practical point is that a preceptor's patient mix decides whether your log fills. A women's health placement with few gynecologic visits can leave you with the hours and not the exams, and the sheet accepts a Certified Nurse Midwife only when at least half of that practice is gynecologic.
Logging at a steady pace
The 2021-22 handbook wants hours logged at an even pace, and a student needs half of them in place by midterm to pass that checkpoint. In a 160-hour MSN course that means 80 hours logged by the middle of a 15-week fall or spring, close to 11 a week; across a 12-week summer the weekly figure climbs to about 13 (our arithmetic).
Two habits help. If you train at your employer, keep work time and clinical time in separate records, as the handbook requires, and enter each clinical day promptly so faculty can see steady progress. BSN to DNP students who began in Spring 2024 or later also record their direct-care clinical hours in Typhon, according to Clarkson's addendum to the DNP Hours Guide. Preceptors chosen with your log in mind
Clarkson students choose us because we match preceptors to what the log has to show, not just to the course title. For NRS 840 we look for providers with a busy pediatric primary care panel so the 110-hour minimum is realistic; for NRS 842, women's health providers who see enough gynecologic visits for the exam counts; for PMHNP, a practice that sees adults, young people and older adults, plus a licensed therapist for the NRS 856 hours.

Questions Clarkson students ask
Does Clarkson still use Typhon in 2026?
It could not be confirmed from public sources. The newest Clarkson documents naming Typhon are the November 2023 clinical sheets and the 2025-26 catalog fee list, and no live Clarkson page mentions it now. Your course faculty and the Canvas course for your first clinical will show which log applies this term.
Why can't I find my preceptor in Typhon?
The likeliest reason is that the DocuSign paperwork is not finished. Clarkson's 2023 sheets say preceptors and sites are added to Typhon only once it is complete. Check whether your preceptor has done the license and credential section and whether the Compliance office is still working on an affiliation agreement.
Do observation hours count toward my clinical hours?
They are logged in Typhon, need faculty approval beforehand and involve no hands-on care. The FNP and AGACNP sheets cap them at 10 optional hours in each course after NRS 830. Ask course faculty whether and how they count toward that course's total before you schedule any.
Can PMHNP students log telehealth hours?
Yes, within the limits in the 2023 PMHNP sheet: telehealth is allowed but not required in psychiatric clinicals, up to 300 hours, and the student must be present with the provider. NRS 830 allows no telehealth for PMHNP students.
What happens if my log is short at midterm?
Under the 2021-22 handbook, a student short of half the course hours at midterm did not pass the midterm check. Tell course faculty early and add clinical days with your approved preceptor. Faculty and the program director may grant an incomplete to a student who is passing but has hours left, at their discretion.
