Approval first, registration second: Clarkson's clinical gate
At Clarkson College you cannot enroll in a clinical course and hunt for a preceptor afterward. The 2026-27 catalog requires preceptor and site approval before registration, and Clarkson's 2021-22 graduate handbook added a first-week completion rule and refused credit for any hours logged ahead of approval.

What the 2026-27 catalog says
Each nurse practitioner clinical course page in the current catalog carries the same line in its notes: "Requires preceptor and clinical site approval prior to registration." The MSN specialty practicums write "practicum site" in place of "clinical site". The note has appeared in every Clarkson catalog since 2014-15, so it is less a hurdle than the backbone of how graduate clinicals run.

How the block worked in practice
Clarkson's 2021-22 Graduate Nursing Student Handbook spelled out the mechanics: students would "not be allowed to enroll/register in a clinical/practicum course without submitting the Clinical/Practicum Site & Preceptor Agreement Form." The agreement went in first, and only then did the course open to you. What that form asks for is covered on the site and preceptor agreement page.
The handbook named two exceptions. Students who had placement requests in with My Clinical Exchange could register while the health system worked through them, and so could a student facing an unavoidable preceptor change, the handbook's example being a preceptor who declines to have the student follow them. Both let registration go ahead; neither lets hours begin early. The My Clinical Exchange guide explains the first route.
Those mechanics come from a handbook Clarkson no longer posts, and research could not establish whether the DocuSign step behind them is unchanged in 2026. The first-week rule
Registering is not the finish line. The same handbook says the form "must be completed by the end of the first week of classes" and that a student whose paperwork is still open "may be required to withdraw from the course." Submitted and completed are different states: submitted means you sent it; completed means your advisor, the Compliance office, your preceptor and Graduate Nursing have each done their part.
On the 2026-27 calendar, week one starts Aug. 20, 2026 for fall, Jan. 7, 2027 for spring and May 13, 2027 for summer. The largest risk to finishing by week one is a site with no affiliation agreement on file, since Clarkson's DocuSign instructions give the College up to two months for contract work. Hours that do not count
Clarkson is plain about early hours. The 2021-22 handbook says hours finished before the paperwork is complete "will not be included in the total clinical/practicum hours required for course completion," and it holds every clinical or practicum hour until course faculty have approved and the closing DocuSign email has arrived.
Two more gates sit in the November 2023 clinical sheets. Preceptors and sites go into Typhon only after the DocuSign paperwork is done, so there is nowhere to record hours until then; see the Typhon guide. And NRS 830 hours start only once you have passed the skills sign-off at Graduate Weekend, the on-campus visit every NP student makes in that course.
A preceptor's yes is not approval. Hours worked between that yes and the final DocuSign email are hours you will have to do again.
Why one late approval moves your whole plan
Clarkson's NP tracks run one clinical course at a time. Each NP track's notes on the program pages limit students to a single clinical course per term and describe the track as built for singular progression, so an FNP student cannot take NRS 842 while waiting on approval for NRS 840. When one course slips a term, every course behind it slips too.
On our reading of that rule, five clinical courses over five consecutive terms is the quickest an NP student can finish the clinical sequence. Missing one approval window adds a full semester, while the seven-year completion limit Clarkson sets for all programs continues to count down. What we do so approval lands before registration
Clarkson students come to us because we plan from the registration date backward. We confirm your preceptor well ahead, check every detail against Clarkson's published rules for your course, and give you the agreement details ready to submit ahead of the spring, summer or fall due date on the clinical deadlines calendar. If a site needs a new contract, you hear it from us in the first week of the search, when there is still time to act on it.
Because the unavoidable-change exception exists for a reason, we keep a qualified second option in view through the term, so a withdrawn preceptor is replaced quickly. Approval belongs to your advisor, Compliance and course faculty, and the file in front of them is finished and accurate. The form below is the place to begin.
Questions Clarkson students ask
Can I register for a clinical course while my preceptor is still deciding?
Under Clarkson's 2021-22 handbook, no: the agreement form had to be submitted before registration, and it can only be started once you have the preceptor's details. The exceptions were a pending My Clinical Exchange request and an unavoidable preceptor change. Ask your Graduate Nursing advisor how the current handbook words it.
Do hours count if my preceptor is approved partway through the semester?
Only the hours after final approval. Clarkson's handbook leaves out of the course total any hours completed before the paperwork is finished, and the 2023 sheets keep a preceptor out of Typhon until the DocuSign step is done. Wait for the final email and for course faculty approval, then start.
What counts as an unavoidable preceptor change at Clarkson?
The handbook's example is a preceptor who declines to have the student follow them. A change like that lets you register without a completed form, but course faculty still need to hear from you, a replacement has to be found promptly, and the new preceptor's paperwork must close before those hours count.
Does the approval rule cover the Nursing Education and Administration practicums?
Yes. The 2026-27 catalog pages for NRS 894 and NRS 898 both require preceptor and practicum site approval prior to registration. Those practicums use their own versions of the agreement form, and their preceptors are judged by different qualification rules from NP preceptors.
Is the first-week deadline the same as census day?
No. The first-week rule comes from the 2021-22 handbook and applies to the agreement form. Census day is a separate calendar date, Aug. 31, 2026 for fall and Jan. 19, 2027 for spring, and ordering in Qualified First/Verified, Clarkson's compliance platform, opens after it.
