Doing your Clarkson clinicals where you work

Clarkson College lets graduate students train at their own employer on two conditions: the hours happen in a department other than your own, and your clinical time is documented apart from your paid time. The site still goes through the full agreement and approval, and your employee access to its systems is not the same as student access.

What Clarkson allows

Your employer is a natural first call, because Clarkson makes sure you have one: the 2021-22 graduate handbook says all graduate nursing students must work as registered nurses throughout the program. The same handbook allowed clinical and practicum hours at the student's place of work, in a department other than the student's own, with work hours and clinical hours kept on separate records. The rule reaches every graduate path that uses a preceptor, the education and administration practicums included.

The November 2023 rotation sheets for all three nurse practitioner tracks repeated the department rule. Working there does not change the current catalog's requirement that the preceptor and site be approved before you register, so an employer placement follows the same placement process as any other site.

Picking the right department

The department rule is easiest to meet in a large organization with many service lines. Match the department to the course, not to your RN job:

  • FNP: an outpatient primary care or rural health clinic in your system that sees all ages, rather than the inpatient floor you staff. Hospitalist hours do not count for FNP courses.
  • AGACNP: a unit that fits the course setting, such as a short-stay or medical-surgical unit for the early courses and step-down, urgent care, ICU or emergency care for NRS 863 and NRS 864. An ICU nurse, for example, might look to the emergency department for NRS 864.
  • PMHNP: a psychiatric clinic, crisis unit or community mental health service outside the unit where you work, with a psychiatrist or PMHNP as preceptor.

Your preceptor must still meet every one of Clarkson's preceptor rules, from two years of experience to acute care certification for AGACNP nurse practitioners. Knowing them from work waives none of it.

Keeping paid time and clinical time apart

Clarkson wanted your employment hours and your clinical hours recorded apart, and the practical reading is simple: a clinical shift is a student shift. Log it in Typhon under your approved preceptor, and keep it off your time card.

Time worked as staff does not turn into clinical time because you learned something on shift. Keeping the two apart on paper also protects you if a manager, a payroll office or course faculty ever asks which role you were in on a given day.

Schedule clinical days as their own blocks where you can. A 160-hour course needs roughly 11 hours a week over a 15-week term, by our arithmetic, and a preceptor in another department can plan around your RN rotation only if you hand them a clear, steady pattern.

The agreement still applies

Employment opens a door; it does not skip Clarkson's paperwork. You still file the Clinical/Practicum Site & Preceptor Agreement Form in DocuSign for each preceptor, course and semester, give the organization's exact legal name, and list every provider you will see patients with.

Clarkson's Compliance office then confirms an affiliation agreement with your employer or starts one, and Clarkson said its side of that work could take up to two months. A health system's clinics and its hospital can sit under different legal entities, so confirm which name belongs on the form before you submit. Any colleague in the host department who sees patients with you needs an agreement of their own, exactly as at an outside clinic. The affiliation agreement guide explains that step.

Employer systems and employee priority

Your staff login is not your student access. Clarkson's November 2023 sheets instructed students employed by Nebraska Medicine to reach the Director ahead of any preceptor hours and obtain a second Epic user ID for their student role; the 2025 resources page added that anyone placed at Nebraska Medicine needs Epic training. Ask any employer's education or placement office how students document before your first clinical day.

Being on staff can also move you up a queue. Children's Nebraska says its own team members get priority for advanced practice student requests, and Clarkson's 2025 resources page said CHI Health prioritizes its employees. Clarkson says its educational partnership with Nebraska Medicine extends to that system's staff and counts "preceptorship and clinical opportunities" among the perks. The Nebraska Medicine guide and the health system guide cover those routes.

Practicums and the RN to BSN at work

Education and administration students can use an employer too. The 2021-22 handbook placed NRS 894 and NRS 898 practicum hours in an area separate from the student's job, under a preceptor holding at least a master's in nursing and two years of experience in nursing education or nursing administration. A hospital education department, or a leadership team other than your own, can fit that description.

RN to BSN students have the plainest permission of all. Clarkson's 2025-26 catalog said clinical applications may be completed at the student's workplace with faculty approval, provided the clinical competencies can be met; NRS 482 is set in a population health environment. Confirm the plan with course faculty before you count on it, since their approval is the condition. The RN to BSN guide has the rest.

Filling the courses your employer cannot

Not every employer can host every course in a track. An FNP student at a hospital may find adult primary care in-house but no pediatric practice for the 110 pediatric hours of NRS 840, or no women's health provider for the 120 hours of NRS 842. A PMHNP student may have no licensed therapist on staff for the 50 therapist hours of NRS 856.

That is where Clarkson students bring us in. Our placement desk finds preceptors outside your employer for the courses it cannot cover, checks them against Clarkson's rules, and times those searches around the courses you keep in-house, so the whole plan runs one course at a time without a gap. Tell us your employer and track in the form on this page.

Questions Clarkson students ask

Can a provider on my own unit precept me?

No. Clarkson's 2021-22 handbook and the November 2023 sheets put an employed student's clinical hours in a department other than their own, which rules out providers on your unit. A provider you know from work who practices in another department can qualify, as long as they meet Clarkson's other preceptor rules.

Can I count hours from my RN shifts as clinical hours?

No. Clarkson asks for work hours and clinical hours to be documented separately, and clinical hours count only with an approved preceptor after the agreement is final, logged in Typhon. A shift worked as staff stays a staff shift, however much you learned during it.

Does my employer need a contract with Clarkson?

Yes, the same as any other site. The Compliance office confirms an existing affiliation agreement with your employer or starts a new one, which Clarkson said could take up to two months. Raise it early with your advisor, and use the organization's exact legal name on the form.

I work at Nebraska Medicine. Is there anything extra?

Yes, a system access step. Per Clarkson's November 2023 sheets, Nebraska Medicine staff contact the Director before their preceptor hours begin and receive a distinct Epic user ID for clinical work as a student. Nebraska Medicine also runs its own student application process with set windows for NP students, so check its timing against Clarkson's paperwork deadline.

Can I use my employer for some courses and outside sites for others?

Yes. Nothing in Clarkson's rules ties you to one site, and each course needs its own approved agreement anyway. Moving from an in-house clinic for NRS 832 to an outside pediatric practice for NRS 840 follows the normal route, as long as each is approved before you register.

Clarkson asks you to find your preceptor. We make the search the easy part.

Tell us your Clarkson track, your city and your next clinical course. We line up preceptors who fit the NRS course and Clarkson's rules, gather the details the site and preceptor agreement asks for, and flag early whether the site needs a new affiliation agreement.

  • Preceptors matched to the course: all-ages primary care for FNP, acute care units for AGACNP, psychiatric providers for PMHNP
  • License, experience and site details checked against Clarkson's rules before the agreement is filed
  • Every clinical course planned in sequence, close to home in a state where Clarkson's graduate nursing meets requirements
