Clarkson College Clinicals for New Mexico Nurses
Clarkson College's 2026-27 state workbook reads Meets for New Mexico on its Graduate Nursing tab, and nurse practitioners in the state hold full practice authority. The rule to watch belongs to the New Mexico Board of Nursing, whose education rules call for Board approval of clinical placement once a program's clinical presence in the state lasts beyond a single semester.

The workbook in the file dated Aug. 28, 2026 answers New Mexico without a footnote. For the licensing contact, Clarkson links nmbon.sks.com, while the Board's main site today is bon.nm.gov.

Every MSN, certificate and DNP track shares the Graduate Nursing answer, and nurse anesthesia reads Meets as well. The RN-BSN tab approves seven states, and New Mexico is not one. Around the state, Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona also read Meets for graduate nursing, while Colorado carries Clarkson's limited-authorization footnote for programs with internships.
The Board's more-than-one-semester rule
New Mexico's Board has a trigger built on time. Its nursing-education rules in the New Mexico Administrative Code say a program whose clinical or field placements in the state outlast one semester has to apply for the Board's clinical-placement approval, and approval from a home-state board leaves a program still bound by New Mexico's minimum standards. Clarkson's NP tracks move through five clinical courses in sequence, one at a time, so a New Mexico resident's clinicals stretch across several terms.
Whether that trigger touches a graduate program is unclear: the part is framed around education leading to a New Mexico nursing license and says nothing specific about NP programs. This guide has no record of how the Board applies it to Clarkson, so put the question to your Graduate Nursing advisor before any site signs, and keep the reply with your clinical file.
Preceptors under New Mexico's standards and Clarkson's
Those rules set the preceptor bar at a nurse with two-plus years of experience and a license matching or exceeding the student's goal. That two-year floor lines up with Clarkson's own, and New Mexico NPs practice with full authority by AANP's count, without a physician agreement behind them.
Clarkson's November 2023 sheets cast a wider net than a nurses-only definition: physicians qualify, and so do physician assistants in FNP and AGACNP courses, New Mexico being outside the four PA-limit states. For the psychiatric courses from NRS 856 on, the preceptor must be a psychiatrist or a PMHNP. The remaining rules sit on the preceptor requirements page, and if a site asks which standard governs a physician or PA preceptor, send the question to your advisor.
Albuquerque and beyond, and your license
The Albuquerque metro, with roughly 925,000 residents, is several times the size of runner-up Las Cruces; the Santa Fe and Farmington metros are smaller again. Presbyterian Healthcare Services and Lovelace Health System are large employers, UNM Health System operates New Mexico's lone academic medical center, and in Santa Fe there is CHRISTUS St. Vincent, part of CHRISTUS Health. Each has its own student channel, and none is presented here as a Clarkson site. The research behind this page records no New Mexico incentive for preceptors.
Your RN license must be effective in New Mexico (RN license guide). New Mexico's compact membership began Jan. 19, 2018. The Board there hands out multistate licenses too, and has charged separately for the multistate version since June 1, 2026, which matters only if New Mexico is your home state; a multistate license issued by another compact state already reaches New Mexico. The state has no APRN Compact law.

Questions Clarkson students ask
Is a PA acceptable as my Clarkson preceptor in New Mexico?
Clarkson's own rules say yes for FNP and AGACNP courses, because the November 2023 sheets list PAs and New Mexico escapes the ban that applies in four other states. A PMHNP student can use a PA for NRS 830 and no later course. Since New Mexico's rules describe preceptors as nurses, get your advisor's view before building a plan around a PA.
Will my Texas or Arizona RN license work for a New Mexico clinical?
If it is the multistate kind, yes. All three states are compact members, so a multistate license from Texas or Arizona reaches into New Mexico and covers RN practice there. A license restricted to one state reaches no farther than that state, and your preceptor needs a New Mexico license either way.
Could I do my clinicals in Colorado instead?
Colorado reads Meets for graduate nursing, but it carries a Clarkson footnote: the college's authorization for programs with internships in Colorado is limited, and Clarkson asks students to contact the program. Your state for Clarkson's purposes also follows the permanent address in MyCC, so clear any cross-border plan with your Graduate Nursing advisor first.
What about Clarkson's RN to BSN in New Mexico?
That tab answers New Mexico with Does Not Meet, as it does most states; only seven read Meets, and Oklahoma is the nearest of them. An RN weighing that program should raise the question with Clarkson and hold on to the reply.
