Clarkson College NP Clinicals in South Carolina
Yes: Clarkson College's 2026-27 state workbook marks South Carolina Meets for Graduate Nursing and CRNA, so you can live in South Carolina and complete Clarkson FNP, AGACNP, PMHNP or DNP clinicals there with approved preceptors licensed in the state. Two details still steer where your hours go: the RN-BSN tab reads differently, and the Georgia half of the Augusta metro is closed.

A single Graduate Nursing answer covers FNP, AGACNP, PMHNP, Nursing Education, Healthcare Administration and the DNP. South Carolina never appeared on the list of states that Clarkson's catalogs excluded from 2018-19 to 2023-24; Georgia did, and still reads Does Not Meet. The RN-BSN tab is another matter: South Carolina is one of the 43 states marked Does Not Meet there, so a nurse eyeing the RN to BSN should raise it with that program first.
Who precepts NPs in a restricted-practice state
AANP rates South Carolina restricted, its tightest tier. An NP there performs delegated acts only under a written arrangement with a physician, and prescriptions for controlled substances are held to supply limits. In practices built around those agreements you may see patients with both the NP and a physician partner, and Clarkson wants an agreement on file for every provider you see patients with, partners included.
South Carolina is not one of the four states where Clarkson's clinical sheets bar PAs, so an FNP student's preceptor may be a physician, an NP or a PA. The track rules still apply: acute-care-certified NPs for AGACNP, psychiatrists and PMHNPs for PMHNP courses after NRS 830. Everything else Clarkson checks is under preceptor requirements.
The state rule for out-of-state programs, Regulation 91-6, covers programs preparing students for initial licensure and says nothing about APRN programs. For a Clarkson NP student, the approvals that matter are Clarkson's own, starting with the site and preceptor agreement before registration.
Where South Carolina NP students look
More than a million people live in the Greenville-Anderson-Greer metro, roughly 900,000 each in the Columbia and Charleston-North Charleston areas, and a slice of the Charlotte metro sits on the South Carolina side. Big systems in the state include McLeod Health and Prisma Health, Roper St. Francis Healthcare, Lexington Health, and MUSC Health, the Medical University's system. Each runs its own student process, and listing them here is geography, not a promise of a Clarkson placement.
Charlotte's metro spans both Carolinas, and North Carolina reads Meets too. A site on that side needs a preceptor licensed in North Carolina, and that state's board sets its own terms for outside students, as the North Carolina guide explains.
Augusta is the trap: its metro spans South Carolina and Georgia, and a clinic on the Georgia side sits in a state Clarkson's workbook marks Does Not Meet.
Licensing and the state's preceptor credit
Multistate RN licenses have been valid in South Carolina since Jan. 19, 2018, and one issued there also works in North Carolina and Georgia, though Georgia is closed to Clarkson graduate clinicals for other reasons. Your preceptor must be licensed for practice in South Carolina, and with no APRN Compact enacted there, an NP preceptor's advanced practice license is South Carolina's own. A state income tax credit, with a deduction layered on for further rotations, rewards unpaid physician, APRN and PA preceptors who precept two or more rotations yearly and clear Medicaid participation thresholds. Only students of South Carolina public or independent schools count, which leaves Clarkson rotations out. After a 2024 amendment it runs through tax year 2029.

Can I do Clarkson FNP clinicals in Greenville or Charleston?
Yes, once your preceptor and site pass Clarkson's approval. The 2026-27 workbook marks South Carolina Meets for Graduate Nursing, which covers FNP, AGACNP, PMHNP and the DNP. You identify the preceptor, file the site and preceptor agreement, and Clarkson approves it before you register for the clinical course.
Is a PA an acceptable preceptor for me in South Carolina?
For FNP courses, yes: Clarkson's November 2023 FNP sheet accepts MDs, DOs, PAs and NPs, and its PA ban covers only Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona and Maryland. PMHNP students cannot use PAs after NRS 830. AGACNP students may learn from PAs, though any NP preceptor on that track must be acute care certified.
Does South Carolina's board have to approve Clarkson before my clinical?
Regulation 91-6, the out-of-state program rule, targets programs leading to initial licensure; APRN programs go unmentioned. For a Clarkson NP student the approvals are Clarkson's: the agreement, the Compliance office's check on any affiliation agreement, and course faculty sign-off before hours begin.
Can I cross into North Carolina for a clinical near Charlotte?
North Carolina also reads Meets. You would need an RN license valid there, which a South Carolina multistate license provides, and a preceptor licensed in North Carolina. Clarkson's approval still comes before any hours.
