Wisconsin students and Clarkson College clinicals
Wisconsin reads Meets Requirements for Graduate Nursing in Clarkson College's 2026-27 state workbook, so a Wisconsin nurse can enroll in Clarkson's online NP, education or administration track and train in Wisconsin. That reverses the older position: Clarkson's catalogs from 2018-19 through 2023-24 named Wisconsin among the states whose graduate nursing students it could not take. Two Wisconsin rules deserve a look before you sign a preceptor.

From the old exclusion list to Meets
Catalogs from 2024-25 on print no state list, and the current workbook gives Wisconsin a clean Meets with no footnote. If something you read calls Wisconsin closed, check its date; the old list ended with 2023-24. Clarkson's licensing link for Wisconsin is the Board of Nursing page kept by DSPS, Wisconsin's Department of Safety and Professional Services. The RN-BSN row still reads Does Not Meet, so RN to BSN applicants should ask the program first.

Wisconsin's approval rule for schools from other states
Unlike Minnesota and Michigan, where research found no such step, Wisconsin puts a school from another state through its own Board. The rule is N 1.06 of Wisconsin's administrative code, and the Board's form for it, 3067-OEE in its April 2026 revision, lists which programs need Wisconsin's approval: graduate nursing, bachelor's RN programs including post-licensure ones, associate RN programs and practical nursing. Holding on to that approval later takes a periodic self-evaluation filed on a second form, 3069OEE.
Research does not show where Clarkson stands with this approval. Clarkson's workbook reads Meets, and its catalog warns that some state boards' requirements do not authorize Clarkson graduate preceptorships, so ask your Graduate Nursing advisor to confirm that Wisconsin rotations are cleared for your track and term before a preceptor commits. Act 17 and the preceptor you will work with
Sept. 1, 2026 brought a new advanced practice framework under 2025 Wisconsin Act 17. Licenses now carry the APRN title in one of four roles, CNM, CNS, CRNA or NP, and the older APNP credential has been folded into APRN licensure. Independent practice, meaning no collaborating physician at all, is a separate application the Board has to approve. AANP's rating for Wisconsin remains reduced practice, based on physician collaboration, with a note on the new law.
So an NP preceptor's credential should now read APRN even where older paperwork says APNP, and many will still practice alongside a collaborating physician. Wisconsin's form also expects anyone teaching or precepting a clinical inside Wisconsin to be Wisconsin-licensed or to hold the privilege to practice in Wisconsin, which matches Clarkson's own rule. Milwaukee, Madison and the northeast
Census Bureau estimates for 2025 put 1,575,010 people in Milwaukee-Waukesha and 709,685 in Madison, with Green Bay (336,756) and Appleton (249,876) the next metros up. Large employers include UW Health, the University of Wisconsin's hospitals and clinics; Froedtert ThedaCare Health, tied to the Medical College of Wisconsin; Aurora Health Care, part of Advocate Health; plus Ascension Wisconsin and Aspirus Health. Each handles students by its own process; none is presented on this page as a Clarkson site. Research recorded no Wisconsin incentive for NP preceptors.
A compact state ringed by non-compact neighbors
Wisconsin has taken multistate licenses since Jan. 19, 2018, so a Wisconsin-issued multistate license held by a resident covers home rotations. Three neighbors, though, are outside the compact: Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois all read Meets for Clarkson, yet none of them honors a Wisconsin multistate license. That bites in the Wisconsin counties of the Twin Cities and Duluth metros, where the nearest clinic may be in Minnesota (Minnesota guide). Iowa is the one neighbor inside the compact.
Wisconsin has not enacted the APRN Compact. Clarkson's license wording is on the RN license guide.

Questions Clarkson students ask
Is Wisconsin still excluded from Clarkson College graduate nursing?
No. The exclusion ran through the 2023-24 catalog; since 2024-25 the catalogs carry no state list, and the 2026-27 workbook marks Wisconsin Meets for every graduate track. If an older email or catalog says otherwise, the current workbook governs. Once your advisor confirms the Wisconsin approval question, you can plan clinicals.
My preceptor's license says APNP. Is that a problem?
It should not be. APNP was Wisconsin's name for the credential before Act 17; the conversion to APRN happened on the state's side, so the same clinician now simply holds an APRN license. Clarkson's checks stay the same: a license valid in Wisconsin, at least two years of experience and practice that fits your course.
Can Wisconsin nurses take Clarkson's online RN to BSN?
Clarkson's 2026-27 workbook marks Wisconsin Does Not Meet on its RN-BSN tab, and Wisconsin's approval form expressly covers post-licensure bachelor's programs from other states. Put both points to the program before applying and keep its answer in writing.
Can I do FNP hours with a Wisconsin physician or PA?
Clarkson's November 2023 FNP sheet accepts MDs, DOs, PAs and NPs, and Clarkson's PA restriction names four other states, not Wisconsin. The site must be outpatient primary care where you see patients of all ages, with no hospitalist hours. The FNP page covers each course.
