Studying NP with Clarkson College from Michigan
Clarkson College's 2026-27 state workbook lists Michigan as Meets Requirements for Graduate Nursing. Living in Michigan therefore fits every online Clarkson graduate track, and the clinical hours can happen close to home. The planning point is licensing. As a non-compact state, Michigan honors only the RN licenses it issues, so each Michigan rotation depends on one of those.

Michigan in Clarkson's workbook
No footnote qualifies Michigan's answer. Clarkson's licensing link for the state opens Michigan's Licensing and Regulatory Affairs department (LARA), where the Board of Nursing sits. Meets means Clarkson may run graduate clinicals here; each preceptor and site still clears Clarkson's review before you can register, through the agreement process.

Settle the Michigan license before anything else
Compact licenses from next door, whether issued in Wisconsin, in Indiana or in Ohio, stop working at the Michigan line. NCSBN's map shows a compact bill, HB 4246, waiting in Lansing, but a pending bill changes nothing yet. Clarkson's admission wording ties your RN license to wherever the clinical occurs, so Michigan hours mean a Michigan license, as the RN license guide explains.
Newcomers should allow time. Before a first Michigan RN license issues, LARA wants a criminal background check, completion of a one-time course on identifying human trafficking victims, and two hours of implicit bias training dated no more than five years before licensure.
Preceptors under Michigan's restricted-practice rules
AANP's restricted rating for Michigan comes down to one rule: controlled-substance orders from an NP rest on delegation by a physician. Delegation governs prescribing; Clarkson's preceptor test looks at license, experience and practice area instead. If you see patients with the delegating physician as well, that physician belongs on Clarkson's agreement form too.
To vet an NP preceptor, look for Michigan's NP specialty certification. Michigan reserves it for nurses who pair an active Michigan RN license with national certification by a Board-recognized certifier, which lines up neatly with Clarkson's demand that preceptors be licensed where you train. Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint
The Census Bureau's 2025 estimates give Detroit-Warren-Dearborn 4,390,913 people, more than three times Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood's 1,183,645. Lansing-East Lansing (479,722) and Flint (401,093) are smaller but real pools. Large systems in Michigan include Henry Ford Health and Corewell Health, plus McLaren Health Care, Trinity Health Michigan and the University of Michigan's system, Michigan Medicine. Their student intake rules are their own, and nothing here presents them as Clarkson sites.
Oversight is light for out-of-state schools. Michigan's approval machinery, Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301 onward, is aimed at in-state schools, and nothing found obliges an out-of-state school to file or give notice ahead of a Michigan clinical. The Board itself was not asked, so confirm with your Graduate Nursing advisor.
Preceptor incentives are thin too. MDHHS's nursing office and the MSU College of Nursing ran a pilot paying preceptors who took MSU FNP or PMHNP students, scaled to hours committed over two semesters. It is over, it covered MSU students only, and research found no Michigan preceptor tax credit.
One trip to Omaha, everything else in Michigan
Clarkson's MSN NP tracks run 750 clinical hours over five courses (975 in the BSN to DNP), taken one course at a time. Travel is limited to one Omaha visit, the Graduate Weekend built into NRS 830; the remaining 2026-27 weekends are Feb. 6-7 and Jun. 5-6, 2027. The Graduate Weekend page covers the skills check-off. Questions Clarkson students ask
Does Clarkson College's online FNP accept students who live in Michigan?
Yes. Clarkson publishes one Graduate Nursing answer per state for every MSN, certificate and DNP track, and Michigan's is Meets for 2026-27. FNP clinicals then need outpatient primary care with patients of all ages, a pediatric block in NRS 840 and a women's health block in NRS 842. The FNP page has the course list.
Is telehealth an option for Michigan PMHNP hours?
Partly. Clarkson's November 2023 PMHNP sheet allowed telehealth for up to 300 hours, with you present alongside the provider, and none in NRS 830. The provider on the screen still needs a license from the clinical's state, which for a Michigan student means Michigan. Ask course faculty whether the current sheet says the same.
Will my NP credential after graduation also come from Michigan?
If you plan to practice in Michigan, yes. The APRN Compact is not law in Michigan, and the state's NP specialty certification requires your own Michigan RN license alongside a national certificate from an approved certifier. National certification comes first; the Michigan certification is a separate application to LARA.
What happens if I move from Michigan to Ohio during the program?
Ohio also reads Meets, so graduate nursing stays open. Your license changes, though: a Michigan license is single-state, so Ohio hours need a license Ohio honors, usually an Ohio multistate license once Ohio is home. Update your permanent address in MyCC, since Policy OG-33 ties your state to it, and tell your program director before the move.
