Ohio and Clarkson College: clinicals, preceptors, licenses
Ohio residents can study with Clarkson College online and train in Ohio: the 2026-27 state workbook marks the state Meets Requirements for Graduate Nursing. Ohio's own code carves out room for APRN students from programs elsewhere, provided an APRN supervises them for the program, and since January 2023 Ohio has honored multistate RN licenses.

Ohio on Clarkson's state workbook
Ohio has no footnote, and Clarkson's licensing link sends Ohio readers to the Ohio Board of Nursing. A Meets row lets Clarkson run your clinicals in Ohio; the preceptor and the site still need Clarkson's approval before registration, a process the clinical placement process page walks through step by step. The RN-BSN tab reads Does Not Meet for Ohio, which RN to BSN applicants should take up with the program.

Division (F): Ohio's exemption for APRN students
Ohio's list of people who may do nursing work without an Ohio license sits in ORC 4723.32. Division (F) of it covers APRN students on three conditions: the program qualifies graduates for a recognized national certification exam or confers a qualifying graduate degree, the student acts under the program's auspices, and supervision comes from an APRN whom the program uses as faculty, teaching assistant or preceptor. Nowhere does the Code ask an out-of-state program to seek Ohio Board approval or send notice first.
Read the supervisor clause closely. Clarkson's November 2023 clinical sheets accept physicians as preceptors in every NP track, and PAs in the FNP and AGACNP tracks, while division (F) speaks of APRN supervision. If a physician would lead your Ohio rotation, ask course faculty how Clarkson reads the section before the agreement is filed. Research did not look at whether Ohio's Department of Higher Education asks anything of Clarkson.
Standard care arrangements in an Ohio practice
AANP puts Ohio among reduced-practice states. The reason: an Ohio NP's standard care arrangement, signed with a physician (or a podiatrist) who collaborates, lasts the length of a career, and Schedule II prescriptions face limits that depend on setting. For your placement, that usually means an NP preceptor with a named collaborator in the background. When you will also see patients with that physician, put both names on Clarkson's agreement form. Four big metros instead of one
Ohio spreads its people across several large metros. In 2025 Census estimates Columbus holds 2,242,028, Cleveland 2,165,775, Ohio's share of Cincinnati 1,757,101 and Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek 826,554. University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic are the Cleveland-area names, OhioHealth is Columbus-based, Mercy Health (Bon Secours Mercy Health) is tied to Cincinnati, and Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center is the fifth large system on the list. Admitting students is each system's own business, and this page presents none of them as open to Clarkson students. Research recorded no Ohio incentive for NP preceptors.
Cincinnati's metro crosses into Kentucky and Indiana, both compact states that read Meets for Clarkson. A northern Kentucky preceptor is therefore realistic, as long as that preceptor holds Kentucky licensure; the Kentucky guide covers Kentucky's own preceptor rule.
Licenses for Ohio hours
Ohio implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on Jan. 1, 2023, years after the first wave of members. An Ohio multistate license, held by an Ohio resident, covers Ohio hours plus other compact states Clarkson clears. Ohio's Board publishes reporting on people practicing in Ohio under other states' multistate licenses, worth a look if you arrived recently. Your preceptor needs Ohio licensure for Ohio hours. Ohio sits outside the APRN Compact as well, leaving NP licensure a state-by-state matter.

Questions Clarkson students ask
Can I complete Clarkson College PMHNP clinicals in Ohio?
Yes, with Clarkson's approval. After NRS 830, your preceptors are psychiatrists or PMHNPs, and 50 hours of NRS 856 go to a licensed master's-prepared therapist. Clarkson's November 2023 sheet also allowed up to 300 telehealth hours with you present. A PMHNP preceptor is an APRN, which sits squarely inside Ohio's division (F) wording. More on the PMHNP page.
Could I do Clarkson's nurse anesthesia program from Ohio?
Ohio reads Meets on the CRNA tab. That program works differently from the NP tracks: Clarkson itself arranges the clinical sites, the didactic phase includes 12 months on campus, and residents need an RN license valid in the compact or in both Nebraska and Iowa. I moved to Ohio from a state outside the compact. Which license do I need?
One that Ohio honors, which in practice means an Ohio license once Ohio is your home. Your old single-state license stops counting at Ohio's border. Also update the permanent address in MyCC, because Clarkson's Policy OG-33 reads your state from it, and tell your program director about the move.
How many clinical hours will I complete in Ohio?
Seven hundred fifty direct-care hours per MSN NP track, 975 in the BSN to DNP: those are the 2026-27 catalog's numbers, spread over five courses taken one at a time. A 160-hour course across a fall or spring term of 15 weeks comes to about 11 hours weekly (computed). The clinical hours page breaks them down by course.
